In the spring of 2022, Gavin was a college student at Duke University. He had a best friend named Alex, and they did everything together. They went to church, played sports, swam, joked around, and spent time with family. They were both good people who prayed, read the Bible, helped the homeless, and respected others.
When they weren’t together, they talked on the phone a lot. But after a while, they both got jobs, so they got busy. One day, Gavin finally had a day off, so he called Alex to see if he wanted to go watch a movie. Alex didn’t answer and just texted back saying he couldn’t talk and would hit him later.
Later that night, Alex texted saying he was free and wanted to come over to Gavin’s house. But then he asked for Gavin’s address and told him to leave the front door unlocked. That didn’t sit right with Gavin because Alex had been there plenty of times and knew he never leaves his door unlocked.
Gavin tried to call him, but Alex declined again and said he only wanted to text. At that point, Gavin was already feeling weird about it.
Gavin texted him back and said they should just meet at Alex’s place at 7 and talk. But Alex said no and that he was already in Gavin’s area. Then he said he was bringing some girls over to party.
That really confused Gavin. Alex knew Gavin had a girlfriend, Rachel, and that he didn’t party like that. Gavin texted back saying he didn’t understand why he was planning all this.
Alex replied saying Rachel wouldn’t have to find out, and that Gavin needed to step out of his comfort zone. That made things even worse.
About 30 minutes later, Alex texted saying they were outside. Gavin looked through the peephole, but nobody was there.
He texted back asking where they were. Alex said they were parked down the street and were at the back door. Gavin went to check still nobody there.
Now Gavin was really on edge. He texted asking if this was some kind of prank. Alex got annoyed and said just open the door. Then he said something that didn’t make sense he said they had known each other since second grade.
That’s when Gavin knew something was off. They didn’t meet until junior year of high school.
That was it. Gavin said he’d open the door but instead, he called 911. He told them someone was outside his house pretending to be his friend, and something didn’t feel right.
About 15 minutes later, the police showed up. They knocked on the door, and Gavin let them in. The officers told him they found a man hiding in the bushes.
The man claimed he was Gavin’s friend and said it was just a prank. But when the police showed him to Gavin, he said right away that’s not Alex. He had never seen that man before.
Gavin looked at him and asked, “What did you do to my friend Alex?”
The man just laughed as the police took him away.
